On 12th January, 1915, the 2nd South Lancashire battalion of 7 Brigade, 3rd Division left their billets in Locre moved into trenches near Lindenhoek in Belgium where they remained until relieved on 16th January. The trenches were in a very bad state and they spent much of their time here trying to improve them, a futile task while it kept raining. The main danger was enemy snipers and and it was probably a sniper’s bullet that killed Thomas Quartley on 15th January.
